From the wild south of New Zealand
The ingredient at the heart of Veren begins in the expansive landscapes of New Zealand’s South Island. Carefully rendered and thoughtfully formulated, deer tallow gives our balms their distinctive nourishment, protection and naturally comforting skin feel.
Why deer tallow?
Deer tallow has a naturally lighter feel, cleaner finish and softer colour than many traditional beef tallows, making it beautifully suited to modern skincare.
Because tallow is biologically familiar, the skin knows how to use it. It supports repair rather than simply coating the surface, replenishing what everyday life, stress and over-active skincare can deplete.
A material of place
New Zealand deer are closely connected to the landscapes in which they are raised. Our tallow is sourced from the South Island, where open pasture, cool conditions and an established deer-farming industry provide the origin for this quietly remarkable material.
Once rendered and refined, the tallow becomes pale, smooth and understated. It has a subtle natural scent and a rich, protective quality that makes it especially suited to balms for dry, delicate and weather-exposed skin.
For us, provenance is not simply a story added at the end. It is where the formulation begins.
Skin barrier supportive
Your skin barrier is your first line of defence. It keeps moisture in and irritation out.
When the barrier is compromised, skin can feel dry, reactive, inflamed or suddenly sensitive – even if it never has been before. This often becomes more noticeable in our 30s and 40s as recovery slows and tolerance changes.
Healthy skin needs more than water. It needs lipids that closely resemble the fats your skin naturally makes. These lipids can;
- Keep moisture locked in
- Reduce sensitivity and irritation
- Maintain a balanced, calm skin surface
Many moisturisers only sit on the surface. To truly soothe and strengthen the skin, you need ingredients that layer in where the barrier struggles and help rebuild what’s been lost.
This is where tallow comes in.
Safe for the whole family to use
Why skin understands tallow
Tallow naturally contains fatty acids such as oleic and stearic acid, along with fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K — components commonly used in skincare to soften skin and support barrier function.
Dermatologists acknowledge that tallow can feel especially supportive for dry or sensitive skin. Some people may find it too occlusive, particularly if prone to oiliness or breakouts – which is why formulation and balance matter.
- Rich in essential fatty acids
- 100% natural
- Readily absorbed by skin
- Contains vitamins A, D, E, K
The Veren Difference
Our deer tallow is rendered specifically from bone marrow fat. Setting Veren apart from all other tallows, and reflecting our focus on deeply nourishing, biologically aligned ingredients.
Deer tallow has a lighter, more refined lipid profile than beef tallow, making it better suited to sensitive or reactive skin.
Deer tallow:
- More closely mimics the skin’s natural lipids
- Absorbs readily without feeling heavy
- Has a finer texture and lower natural scent than beef tallow
Our deer tallow is sourced in the South Island of New Zealand from farmed and wild deer populations.
Deer tallow is where we begin, not where it ends.
Every formulation is built around deer tallow, then paired with botanical oils and infusions chosen for a specific purpose. Such as passionfruit seed oil for lightness. Tamanu for repair. Kawakawa for comfort. Calendula for delicate skin.
Each ingredient plays a supporting role – nothing more, nothing less.
Skin-calming benefits
“Watching my son’s skin respond to simple, nourishing ingredients changed the way I think about skincare. Rather than constantly trying to correct or adjust the skin, I believe in supporting it with ingredients that help it function at its best naturally – because healthy skin already knows what to do.”
