How to Choose the Right Tallow Balm for Your Skin

How to Choose the Right Tallow Balm for Your Skin

Skin doesn’t always need more actives, exfoliation or correction.
Different skin types need different kinds of support. Sometimes calming, sometimes protection, sometimes lightweight replenishment, sometimes deep recovery.

Deer tallow balm is increasingly being used to support dry, sensitive and compromised skin thanks to its rich concentration of skin-compatible lipids (the naturally occurring fats and oils that help keep skin soft, resilient and protected).

But not all tallow balms are designed to do the same thing.

Some formulas are better suited to reactive skin, others focus on barrier protection, while some are designed to deeply replenish dry or overworked skin. Texture, botanical oils and the level of occlusion all play an important role in how a balm performs on the skin.

At Veren, each balm is formulated with New Zealand deer marrow tallow, but designed for a different type of skin support. From calming inflammation to protecting delicate skin or delivering lightweight daily nourishment.

What is deer tallow?

Deer tallow is a rendered fat traditionally used to help protect and replenish dry skin. Veren uses deer marrow tallow, which is rendered from nutrient-rich marrow fat rather than hard external fat deposits.

Tallow is naturally rich in fatty acids and lipids that help reduce moisture loss and support the skin barrier. Because these lipids closely resemble the skin’s own natural composition, many people find tallow balms deeply nourishing and protective, particularly for dry or compromised skin.

Compared to beef tallow, deer marrow tallow has a lighter texture, lower natural odour and softer skin feel, making it especially well suited to modern body care formulations.

At Veren, deer tallow is paired with botanical oils, infusions and extracts chosen for specific skin concerns — from calming reactive skin to replenishing rough, depleted areas.

Which Veren balm is right for my skin?

Balm Texture Best For Hero Ingredients
Nurture Rich whipped barrier balm Babies, eczema-prone skin, moisture protection Zinc, chamomile, calendula
Soothe Gentle calming balm Reactive, inflamed or sensitised skin Kawakawa, mānuka
Repair Omega-rich recovery salve Cracked hands, heels, dry skin Hemp, black cumin, tamanu
Revive Lightweight conditioning balm Face, décolletage, daily nourishment Passionfruit, sea buckthorn, jojoba

Which tallow balm is best for sensitive skin?

Sensitive skin can present in different ways. Some skin needs protection from moisture and friction, while other skin types respond better to lightweight calming support with minimal stimulation.

Nurture — Protective Barrier Balm

Nurture is our richest balm and is designed to act like a breathable barrier cream for delicate or compromised skin.

Whipped deer tallow is combined with low-level zinc to help protect skin from moisture, friction, wind exposure and environmental stress. Chamomile, calendula and lemon balm are slowly infused directly into the tallow without essential oils, creating a calm, low-irritation formula suited to sensitive skin.

Many families use Nurture as:

  • A baby balm

  • Nappy cream

  • Barrier balm for winter skin

  • Support for dry or eczema-prone areas

  • Protection for skin exposed to moisture and chafing

Because it is essential oil free, Nurture is often the gentlest option for highly delicate skin.

Soothe — Gentle Calming Balm

Soothe is designed for skin that feels reactive, inflamed or visibly irritated.

Kawakawa-infused sweet almond oil and mānuka leaf extract help calm redness and support skin recovery, while jojoba and deer tallow provide lightweight nourishment without feeling overly heavy or occlusive.

Compared to Nurture, Soothe feels softer and lighter on the skin and contains only a very low level of essential oils.

Many people reach for Soothe when skin feels:

  • Red

  • Reactive

  • Easily aggravated

  • Overexposed

  • Dry and uncomfortable

Which tallow balm is best for dry or cracked skin?

For rough, cracked or overworked skin, we recommend Repair.

Repair — Omega-Rich Recovery Salve

Repair is formulated for skin exposed to water, weather, tools, friction and environmental stress. Hemp seed oil, black cumin seed oil and tamanu oil deliver a high concentration of linoleic-rich fatty acids that help replenish depleted skin and support barrier recovery.

The texture is denser and more salve-like than Revive or Soothe, making it especially useful for areas prone to cracking and dryness.

Many people use Repair for:

  • Dry hands

  • Cracked heels and feet

  • Gardening hands

  • Kitchen hands

  • Winter skin

  • Rough elbows and knees

  • Skin exposed to frequent washing

Repair also has the most botanical aroma profile in the range, with notes of cedarwood, juniper and the earthy warmth of tamanu and black cumin.

Can I use deer tallow on my face?

Many people use tallow balm on the face, particularly when supporting dry, depleted or sensitised skin.

Because deer tallow contains skin-compatible lipids, it can help support moisture retention and barrier function while softening dry areas.

That said, everyone responds differently to facial balms. Especially if you have oily, acne-prone skin.

We recommend:

  • Patch testing first

  • Introducing balms gradually

  • Allowing time for your skin to adjust

  • Using a smaller amount than you might on the body, about the size of a small pea.

For facial use, Revive is generally the best place to start. Ensure your skin is clean and gentle press into your skin.

Revive — Lightweight Conditioning Balm

Revive is our lightest balm and was designed to feel silky, breathable and fast-absorbing on the skin.

Passionfruit seed oil delivers lightweight linoleic-rich nourishment that helps support healthy ceramide function, while jojoba oil closely mirrors the skin’s natural sebum for a softer, more balanced finish. Sea buckthorn brings antioxidant-rich conditioning support and helps improve the appearance of dry or depleted skin.

Revive is commonly used on:

  • Décolletage
  • Neck
  • Dry body skin

  • Areas needing lightweight nourishment and glow

Compared to the rest of the range, Revive is less occlusive and more conditioning-focused.

Can tallow balm be used on babies?

Many parents prefer simple, low-irritation balms for babies and children, particularly for dry or delicate skin.

Nurture was specifically designed with this in mind.

Using whipped deer tallow, zinc and calming botanical infusions of chamomile and calendula, Nurture forms a breathable protective layer that helps shield skin from moisture, friction and dryness without relying on essential oils or heavily fragranced ingredients.

Parents commonly use Nurture for:

  • Nappy area protection

  • Dry cheeks

  • Windburn

  • Dribble rash

  • Dry patches

  • Everyday barrier support

As with any skincare product, we recommend patch testing first, particularly on highly sensitive skin.

Healthy skin needs support, not stress

At Veren, we believe skincare doesn’t always need to be stronger, harsher or more corrective.

Often, skin simply needs the right kind of support.

Whether that’s a protective barrier balm, a calming treatment balm, a lightweight conditioning balm or a deeply restorative salve, each Veren formula is designed to help support healthy, resilient skin in its own way.
